Dia Dhaoibh!

When you travel to a foreign country or plan to move there, it's a great idea to learn some basic phrases.

The interesting thing about Ireland is that Irish is only spoken fluently in certain areas of the country known as "An Ghaeltacht", however the locals usually love when Irish is spoken to them.

In this post, you'll find a quick lesson on simple greetings trí Ghaeilge, which, when used, will surely be welcomed by the locals.

Greetings Lesson:

  • Hello – Dia dhuit

  • Goodbye – Slán

  • Good night – Oíche mhaith!

  • My name is … – … is ainm dom/Is mise …

  • What is your name? – Cad is ainm duit?

  • Nice to meet you – Deas bualadh leat.

  • How are you? – Conas atá tú?

  • I’m fine thank you – Tá mé go maith, go raibh maith agat.

  • Please – Mas é do thoil é

  • Thank you – Go raibh maith agat

  • Excuse me – Gabh mo leithscéal?

Hopefully you have enjoyed the above. There is nothing like having a few phrases in your back pocket when travelling, to help with settling in to a new place.

Let me know in the comments below if you have travelled to "An Ghaeltacht" in Ireland and chatted to any locals.

Slán anois,
