Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility
The right to education is mentioned in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It says that elementary education should be free and mandatory.

Education is important because it helps children escape poverty and have a better future. However, around the world, about 244 million kids and teenagers are not in school. Also, 617 million can't read or do basic math. In sub-Saharan Africa, less than 40% of girls finish secondary school, and around four million refugee children and youth are not in school. This is unfair and not okay.

The International community reiterated that education plays a key role in building sustainable and resilient societies, and contributes to the achievement of all other Sustainable Development Goals. So this is the reason we mark 24 January an International Day of Education.

The 17 goals for the International Day of Education are

No poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and wellbeing, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean water and sanitation, Affordable and clean energy, Decent work and economic growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable cities and development, Responsible consumption and production, Climate action, Life below water, Life on Land, Peace, justice and strong institutions, Partnerships for the goals.

You can read about each of these goals on  UN.org.
