Your stay in Bulgaria won’t be complete at its maximum if you don't spend at least one day in one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world - Plovdiv. Just 2 hours away from the capital Sofia, the city of Plovdiv is just as magnetic and historically rich as it deserves to be explored.

To provoke your interest, I will go through some of the most interesting facts about this city and let your imagination expand.  


Let’s begin!

Plovdiv stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of human civilization. With a history that stretches millennia, this city has witnessed the rise and fall of empires and emerged as one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

Plovdiv was founded in the 6th millennium BC and over the centuries it has been ruled by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Bulgarians. It is home to some historical monuments like the Roman Amphitheatre, the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, and the Roman Odeon, dating back from the bygone era, a Roman aqueduct, the Plovdiv Roman Stadium, the Dzhumaya Mosque, etc.

This city is a living archaeological site, with over 200 archaeological sites, 30 of which are of national importance. There are many remains from antiquity.

In the 14th century, Plovdiv fell under Ottoman rule, adding another layer to its rich history. The city became a vibrant center of trade, culture, and craftsmanship.  

Plovdiv is known for its seven hills, which offer stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside.

The city is also home to some festivals and events throughout the year, including the Plovdiv International Fair and Kapana Fest

Kapana, the creative district of Plovdiv, hosts the Kapana Fest - a lively event celebrating art, music, and the vibrant atmosphere of the area. The streets are filled with contemporary performances, live music, art exhibitions, and culinary delights during this festival. 

The Old Town of Plovdiv is a unique city within the city of Plovdiv with its rhythm and lifestyle. The architecture features archaeological sites, museums, art galleries, old houses and public buildings, religious temples, cafes and restaurants, romantic courtyards, and picturesque cobblestone streets. The Old Plovdiv is a popular venue for concerts and exhibitions, casual and business meetings, sightseeing or just strolling around. 

The labyrinthine streets of the Old Town bear witness to the Ottoman period, with its style of houses and mosques providing a glimpse into the city's multicultural past.

As a cultural hub in Bulgaria, the city of Plovdiv became the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
