Hi friends!
Today’s blog launches us on a brand new series in which we will bring several elements of the OLS English community together: The ListenUp! Series and our Career Corner.
As you know from our first episode of ListenUp!,
we introduced the possibility for you to deepen your interaction with OLS through
fun interviews where you also get to practice speaking English using the voice
recording tool. We did a trial run of ListenUp! in the Practice Your English forum, but now we're bringing everything to one place: right here in The OLS Blog!
Many of you are studying in English to prepare for a career in which you will need this language. Some of you are currently in internships in non-anglophone countries, but your work is conducted in English.
There may be a few of you who are learning English, but may not yet know what career path to take. Well, you’re in luck! Our series will explore different careers in which our interviewees talk about their chosen path and the role that English plays.
For those who aren’t quite sure about the necessity of English, today we will go through several reasons why English is a skill set you want to add to your toolbox.

English – The Lingua Franca
As the most spoken language in the world where over half the world’s countries use it as their main language to communicate with one another, you can not only travel and explore different cultures; but you can also build your professional networks with English. Remember, all of the Erasmus Generation Meetings are conducted in English!
English Opens New Career Opportunities
The global job market has a high demand for multilingual people and one of those languages is usually English. Companies need employees who can speak with clients and partners all over the world. Not only that, but if the common language of your international office is English, you don’t want to miss out on bonding time with your colleagues, do you?
English is the language of the Internet
Just a simple browse through the internet and you’ll find that tutorials, videos, etc will show you that people from all over the world choose to make their videos in English. Why? To reach more of an audience, creators know that English is the common language to communicate with others who are thousands of kilometers away.
English, The Language of Academia
More often than not, having English proficiency opens the door to some of the world’s top colleges and universities. B2 level in English is the minimum requirement for most higher education institutions. Luckily for you, OLS is by your side and can help you achieve your B2 goal!
English, the Friend-Maker!
Yes, friends! English is not only the language of business, but it’s the language of friend-making too! Being on mobility is all the proof you need that that common language when you are trying to make friends is often English. Yes, it’s important to learn your host country’s language too; but in the beginning, the ice-breaker language to make friends is often English. I’m sure some of you have some stories to share, right?! Did you use English to make your first friends abroad?
READY TO CONTINUE YOUR ENGLISH EXPLORATION & MEET SOME FOLKS JUST LIKE YOU?
With 2 billion (yes, BILLION!) English speakers in the world, 67 countries in which English is an official language, and by being in our English community; you are on the path to making great strides in your professional and personal lives.
The next step is getting to know a few people who’ve done just that. Stay tuned for ListenUp! Episodes 1, 2, and 3 where we will meet a scuba diving instructor, a permaculture student, and a special guest from Malta!
