Dear Community

Over the weekend, Carnival was being celebrated worldwide, however in Denmark, we celebrate Fastelavn, a cherished Danish tradition dating back centuries. Fastelavn, which falls on the Sunday or Monday before Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of the Lenten season.

Originating from the Catholic tradition of Carnival, Fastelavn is deeply rooted in Danish culture and is celebrated with joyous festivities across the country. It's a time for families and communities to come together, indulge in delicious treats, and partake in playful customs.

Fastelavn festivities often include dressing up in colorful costumes, parades, and engaging in traditional games such as "slå katten af tønden" (hit the cat out of the barrel) - a beloved Danish variation of the piñata game. In this cheerful activity, children take turns striking a barrel filled with candy until it breaks open, symbolizing the defeat of winter and the arrival of spring.

I am very curious to hear how you will be honouring these cherished traditions, and how you will spend your day filled with fun activities, delicious treats, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in Danish culture. Write in the comment field below how you celebrated this day or if you tried any traditional treats such as Fastelavn's Boller. These are pasty rolls filled with a sweet custard or cream, they come in many different colours and flavours. If you have tried them, what was your favourite?

Stay tuned for more details on our upcoming Fastelavn celebration.

Happy Celebrating!
