Dear community,

Giving compliments back and forth with Dutch natives is one of the ways to build a deeper connection. In this discussion I'll share some examples of compliments you can give to Dutch speaking people. In the comments you can share your favourite type of compliment to give and to receive :-)

Here are some of the examples:

  • Well done! - Goed gedaan!
  • What a nice (jumper)! - Wat een leuke (trui)!
  • What a beautiful (painting)! - Wat een prachtig schilderij!
  • You are so kind! - Je bent zo aardig.
  • I am so happy we are friends. - Ik ben zo blij dat wij vrienden zijn.
  • I am thankful for your friendship. - Ik ben zo dankbaar dat wij vrienden zijn.
  • What an amazing accomplishment! - Wat een geweldige prestatie!
  • I am so proud of you! - Ik ben zo trots op jou!
  • Keep up the good work! - Ga zo door!
  • You are so good at (singing). - Je bent echt goed in (zingen).
  • You did a great job! - Je hebt het geweldig gedaan!
  • I really like you. - Ik vind je echt aardig/ leuk/ lief.
  • The food that you made was really delicious. - Het eten dat je hebt gemaakt was echt heerlijk.
Another way to give a compliment is by using gestures. Some of the most common ones are:
  • Giving a high five to tell someone they've done a great job
  • To give a thumbs up, to tell someone they're doing a good job
  • And the make a circle with your index finger and thumb, which is especially used for when the food someone cooked is tasty. Another way to indicate food is tasty is by sort of waving towards and next to your cheek and saying 'mmm'

Now I'd love to hear from you! What is your favourite type of compliment to give? And what is the your most favourite one to receive? Let's share together in the comments below!

I know my favourite compliment is when someone shows appreciation for the food I've made, as I love cooking :-)

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
