International Mother Language Day 2024
The idea to celebrate International Mother
Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at
the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout
the world since 2000.
The theme of International Mother Language Day celebration 2024 is “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”. Today, 250 million children and young people still do not attend school and 763 million adults do not master basic literacy skills. Mother tongue education supports learning, literacy and the acquisition of additional languages.

Namen mednarodnega dneva maternih jezikov je spodbujanje spoštovanja tako lastne materinščine kot tudi drugih ljudi ter njihovih materinščin in kultur. Z njim opozarjajo na potrebo po ohranjanju kulturne in jezikovne raznolikosti po svetu.
Materni jezik je jezik s katerim nas prvič ogovori mama in je tisti v katerem spregovorimo svojo prvo besedo, zato mu rečemo tudi prvi jezik. Z maternim jezikom se najlažje izražamo, razmišljamo, pišemo, sanjamo in na splošno komuniciramo. Družbeno gledano je materi jezik pomemben za razvoj in krepitev narodne zavesti.
