Crete, the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean is one of the world's most impressive and bustling destinations. From ancient times until today, it has attracted visitors with its rich history, culture, stunning beaches, natural landscapes, and traditional gastronomy.

History and Culture

The history of Crete is rich and multi-layered. It was the fourth country in the world to develop a civilization, the Minoan, known for the magnificent palace of Knossos and the impressive finds found there. The ancient Minoans built architectural achievements and had a developed trade and culture.

Throughout its history, Crete has been conquered by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Ottomans. Each occupation has left its mark on the island's culture, architecture, and art.

Natural beauty

Crete is known for its amazing natural landscapes. From the extensive beaches with crystal clear waters to the impressive mountains and gorges, every corner of the island is full of unique beauty.

The Samaria Gorge is one of the most famous natural destinations in Crete and Greece in general. In the summer months, it turns into a hiking trail, offering visitors a unique experience crossing its rocks and ravines.

Gastronomy and Local Products

Crete is famous for its wonderful gastronomy. Local products and traditional recipes are part of the island's daily life. From olive oil and fresh vegetables to wine and cheeses, the flavours of Crete are simply delightful.

The Cretan diet, known as one of the healthiest in the world, combines fresh local produce with traditional cooking techniques, creating a rich spectrum of flavours.

Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) have profoundly impacted Crete. Through these initiatives, individuals from Crete and across Europe have converged to partake in enriching cultural exchanges, educational collaborations, and community-driven projects. The ESC volunteers, alongside students, educators, and professionals, have contributed their time and skills to various endeavours, from environmental conservation efforts to youth empowerment programs, leaving a lasting positive imprint on Crete's communities. As they immerse themselves in Crete's ancient ruins, idyllic villages, and azure coastlines, Erasmus+ and ESC participants broaden their horizons and cultivate deep connections with one another and the island's residents. Together, they embody the spirit of solidarity and cooperation, fostering mutual understanding and collective progress in Crete and beyond.
