Today let’s talk about Latvian artists. If you watched the OLS introduction video and read previous blogs, you might know already Mark Rothko. Despite his career being built outside Latvia, we proudly consider him one of our own. However, beyond Rothko, there are many more talented artists and painters whom Latvians hold in high regard. Today, we'll take a closer look at one such classical painter, Vilhelms Purvītis. He has made an indelible mark on the Latvian art scene and was also one of the founders and the first dean of the Art Academy of Latvia. He's like the grandfather of Latvian landscape painting, known for his breathtaking views of Latvia's nature. His role in founding the Art Academy of Latvia helped shape the country's art education, influencing countless artists after him.

During springtime, it's common to hear people exclaim, "Oh, those are Purvītis birch trees!" as many scenes closely resemble his paintings.

Purvītis possessed a remarkable talent for capturing ever-changing landscapes as the seasons shifted, and each of his paintings reflects a profound understanding of nature's moods. Whether it's the gentle thaw of spring, the vibrancy of summer, the melancholic beauty of autumn, or the serene stillness of winter, Purvītis masterfully immortalizes the essence of each season.
