Delving into the allure of precious gems, our previous blog post unveiled the timeless beauty of the Ohrid Pearl, a cherished tradition on Lake Ohrid's shores in North Macedonia.
Macedonia is not a country known for large deposits of precious metals. Until several years ago we did not know that precious stones even existed. Our only precious stone was the Ohrid pearl which was the result of a technological process. To leave Ohrid without a pearl was as if you had not been to Ohrid!
But, then, an artisan accidentally “discovered” the country’s unique gemstone – the Macedonian ruby.

It is well known that the highest quality rubies in the world are compared in value to diamonds. It is also true that there are synthetic rubies on the market, which have excellent purity, great color, and are not expensive – the difference is in the price. But the Macedonian ruby is made of natural stones, which have been created in the Earth’s crust for millions of years.
Unlike synthetic imitations flooding the market, the Macedonian ruby, born from aluminum oxide-corundum in Prilep's vicinity, showcases nature's craftsmanship in a radiant pink-purple hue after meticulous processing.
The geological anomaly of corundum, which manifests as ruby when red and sapphire when blue, adds to the mystique of this gemstone. While similar sites exist sporadically across Europe, none match the quality and allure of the Macedonian ruby.
In a world where mass production often overshadows authenticity, the Macedonian ruby stands as a beacon of uniqueness and heritage.
Celebrated for its unique hue and accessible price range of 10 to 100 euros, the Macedonian ruby serves as a tribute to Macedonia's abundant natural legacy.
Despite its humble origins, the Macedonian ruby has garnered international acclaim, finding its place among the elite gems showcased in London alongside treasures from Burma and Sri Lanka. Its significance transcends mere aesthetics; for believers in the power of gemstones, the ruby symbolizes vitality, fertility, and strength, resonating deeply with the essence of human energy.
One of the most remarkable instances of the Macedonian ruby's prominence is its inclusion in the cross crafted for Pope Benedict XVI, a poignant tribute from Macedonia to the global stage. Just as this gem adorns the highest echelons of society, it also holds a special place in the hearts of locals, embodying the essence of their homeland.
