On June 10th, Portugal celebrates Portugal Day, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. This national holiday also marks the death of the poet Luís Vaz de Camões in 1580, the author of Os Lusíadas.
ℹ️ Camões was a symbolic figure associated with the Age of Discoveries, and the regime used his legacy to celebrate the colonial territories and the sense of belonging to a vast nation spread across the world, united by a common race and language.
ℹ️ Initially, June 10th was only a municipal holiday, but it gained national prominence during the Estado Novo regime. From that period onwards, Camões Day began to be celebrated nationwide. Since 1978, this day has been designated Portugal Day, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.
To celebrate Portugal Day in the OLS Portuguese Community, I want to take you on a journey through a very symbolic element in Portugal, the Portuguese tile!
- Learn more about the history of the Portuguese tile in the new blog post - A História Do Azulejo Português
- Test your reading comprehension in the new discussion topic - Compreensão de leitura ✍ - Blog Post "A História do Azulejo Português"
See you there and enjoy the holiday :)
