The Midsummer Festival in Lithuania, known locally as 'Rasos' or 'Joninės,' is a significant cultural and traditional celebration held on the night of June 23rd to 24th. It marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Many villages and towns organize public events with music, dance performances, and cultural exhibitions to celebrate the occasion. This celebration is highly popular among families and friends who come together to enjoy a good time.

On that night, the whole of Lithuania is celebrating, no matter where you go. Every village and city will have its own music concert, bonfire, nice food, and other folklore traditions. However, the most beautiful and massive celebration is held in Kernavė, the historical capital of Lithuania. Every hill has its own bonfire, and a fair with music and art performances is organized for that night.

If you go to Joninės, you must know some of our traditions, so you would better understand and know what’s happening.

Let’s take a look:

  1. Bonfires and Fire Jumping: Bonfires are central to the celebrations, symbolizing the sun and its power. People gather around bonfires in the evening, sing songs, and dance. The bonfires usually are huge, and depending on the venue of the celebration, they are several or even more.

  1. Herbal and Floral Traditions: Midsummer is associated with collecting and using various herbs and flowers. Women make wreaths from these flowers and wear them during the celebration. These wreaths are then floated down rivers or set adrift on lakes, symbolizing the hopes and wishes for the coming year.

  1. Feasting and Traditional Foods: Traditional Lithuanian dishes are prepared for the Midsummer celebrations, including dumplings (called "cepelinai"), herring, potatoes, and various dairy products. The feasting is accompanied by singing traditional songs and dancing traditional dances (such as the circle dance called "ratelis"). These dances are easy to follow and everyone can join.

Overall, the Midsummer Festival in Lithuania is a vibrant and joyous celebration of nature, community, and cultural heritage, reflecting the country's rich folklore and traditions. Don’t miss your opportunity to visit, while you are here!
