Dear community,

How are things going with your English learning goals? I hope you're making some real progress with your efforts and starting to feel more confident when speaking English. Over the summer, I want to dedicate some time in the community to help each other with language learning practices and techniques that will help you improve your skills over time. Of course, we all have different brains and learning styles, but I'm sure that at least one of the techniques will work for you.

Learning Vocabulary
Today I want to dedicate some time and attention to learning vocabulary. One thing that helps me improve my vocabulary when learning a new language is to write down each new word I learn on a flashcard and write the translation on the back. I will then repeatedly go back through the flashcards over a period of time until I effortlessly remember the meaning of the new words.

Do you have any specific vocabulary learning tips that help you? If so, please share with the community so we can all help each other improve and learn :-)

Warmly,

Marieke, OLS Community Manager

Hi,
My tip is to watch movies and TV shows without subtitles, listen to radio, or read books in English. None of those have to be filled with substance, just that they're interesting to you. (0.99€ romance books can work really well for this. There are a lot of decent  ones, and a lot can be free as well)
Movies and TV shows show you the meaning of the words they're saying -  it's contextual unerstanding and learning of phrases and words.
Radio/ Audio Podcasts help with pronunciation and understanding of different accents.
And books really expand your knowledge of the ways to put sentences together as well as synonyms and certain phrases and their uses in the language. Though be cautions when learning new words from books, check the right pronunciation online. And maybe its meaning.
Hope that helps.
