Living in Croatia as a student is a fun experience, but understanding local etiquette is essential for blending in and making connections with the locals (and please, do it because it will add so much to your exchange experience)!
Do greet people politely with a friendly "Dobar dan" (Good day) or "Bok/ Bog/ Zdravo" (Hi). When meeting someone for the first time, a firm handshake is expected, and it’s common to maintain eye contact as a sign of respect.
Don’t forget to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home. It’s customary to switch to indoor slippers, so don’t be surprised if you’re offered a pair.
Do bring a small gift if you're invited to a Croatian home. Flowers, wine, or chocolates are common tokens of appreciation.
Don’t be too casual with time. Punctuality is valued in Croatia, so aim to be on time for social gatherings, classes, or appointments. If you’re late, make sure it’s not more than 15 minutes, we try to value else’s time.
Do familiarize yourself with Croatian dining etiquette. For example, it’s polite to wait for the host to start eating before you begin. Also, it’s customary to say "Dobar tek!" (Bon appétit) before a meal.
Don’t raise your voice in public places, especially in restaurants or on public transportation. Croatians generally appreciate a quieter, more composed atmosphere in shared spaces.
These guidelines will help you navigate Croatian culture more smoothly, but every region may have its own unique customs. Have you noticed any other do’s and don’ts during your time in Croatia? Share your observations in the comments to help other students make the most of their experience!
