Hello Everyone,

With a new semester approaching, I couldn't miss the chance to share some content to help you through the coming months in Portugal! The Erasmus+ programme is more than just living in another country, it’s about making friendships, discovering new cultures, learning, having new experiences, and stepping out of your comfort zone! It's an adventure that will help you grow both academically and personally!

This blog post has been created to help you make the most of your time in Portugal. Let’s get started!

1. Before Erasmus

  • Before your journey begins, try to research your city and Portugal. Each city has its own charm and unique characteristics. Take the time to learn about the local culture, main tourist attractions, climate, and traditions.

  • Make sure you have all the necessary documentation for your trip. Don’t forget to bring essential documents, such as your university acceptance letter, health insurance, and academic records.

  • Many of you might not yet know where you'll be living. The housing situation in Portugal isn’t the best now, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find the right place for you. You can opt for university residences, shared apartments with other students, or even stay with host families.

2. You’ve Arrived in Portugal: What to Do in the First Days

  • As soon as you arrive, take some time to explore your new home. Walk through the streets, discover local markets, try Portuguese cuisine, visit the main tourist attractions, and most importantly, try to integrate into student groups! If you’re living in shared accommodation, this can be easier, but if not, the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) in your city can help, as they organise events to integrate the Erasmus community!

  • Take part in the welcome sessions and orientations organised by the university. These sessions are a great opportunity to meet other Erasmus students, get useful information about the Portuguese academic system, and stay informed about all the events.

  • Although many people speak English, learning a few basic sentences in Portuguese can make a big difference. Showing interest in the language is the first step, and the OLS Portuguese Community can help you with that.

3. Life in Portugal: Culture, Cuisine, and Leisure

  • Portugal has a rich cultural heritage, with traditions that vary from region to region. Don’t miss the opportunity to live new experiences in another country and immerse yourself in Portuguese culture.

  • One of the best parts of the Erasmus+ programme is meeting people from all over the world. Take part in events, and trips for students, and don’t forget about the local students. Portuguese students can greatly help improve your Portuguese language skills and show you places that aren’t in the tourist guides!

4. Challenges: Adaptation

  • The Portuguese academic system might be different from what you’re used to. Stay organised, set schedules, and if you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to ask for help from your teachers or classmates.

  • It’s normal to feel homesick, especially in the first few months. Try to stay in touch with your family and friends. Sharing your culture with your new friends is a great way for them to get to know you and bring a bit of your home to your new city!

  • Studying abroad is an exciting experience, but it can also be stressful. Don’t forget to take care of your mental health and keep up some hobbies you had before living abroad, such as exercising or reading.

  • Document your experience in Portugal. Write about the places you’ve visited, the people you’ve met, and the experiences that have left a mark on you. Not only will it be a great souvenir, but it will also help you reflect and love the Erasmus programme even more.

5. Tips for Saving Money

  • Many cultural institutions, public transport, and even some restaurants offer student discounts. Always carry your student card with you to take advantage of these opportunities.

6. Have Fun!

  • Lastly, have fun and make the most of these months. Taking part in the Erasmus+ programme is a unique opportunity you will always remember fondly!

I hope this article helps you in this adventure, and remember, I’m always here to help you practice Portuguese and make your Erasmus programme even better!
