Hikes to Do in France and Belgium

France and Belgium, two European countries with diverse and varied landscapes, offer endless hiking possibilities, whether you're a fan of peaceful walks or passionate about trekking in nature.

From towering mountains to mysterious forests, and stunning coastal paths, these countries have plenty to offer hikers of all levels.

In this article, I’ll introduce you to some of the best hikes to do in France and Belgium.

Hikes in France

Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB)

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most iconic hikes in Europe. This 170 km circuit crosses three countries (France, Italy, Switzerland) around Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe.

This trek takes you through breathtaking landscapes, towering glaciers, alpine meadows, and picturesque villages. The full hike takes about 10 days, but you can do just parts of it depending on your level and preferences.

GR20 in Corsica

The GR20 is often described as one of the most challenging long-distance hiking trails in Europe. Spanning 180 km, it crosses Corsica from north to south, from Calenzana to Conca.

It plunges you into wild landscapes, with rugged mountains, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers. Hikers must be well-prepared, as some sections require good physical condition and mountain experience.

Although demanding, the GR20 is incredibly rewarding. If you don’t have the time or physical capacity to complete the full route (about 15 days), some easier sections, like the Vizzavona to Bavella stretch, are accessible.

The Calanques Trails (Marseille)

Located between Marseille and Cassis, the Calanques offer an exceptional setting for hiking, with limestone cliffs plunging into the Mediterranean. The Calanques National Park boasts several trails of varying difficulty, revealing secret coves, turquoise waters, and spectacular views.

I went there a few years ago and loved it! The hike to the Calanque d’En Vau has some challenging sections, but it’s worth it—one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.

The Massif du Sancy (Auvergne)

The Massif du Sancy, located in the Auvergne region, is a paradise for hikers looking for green landscapes and dormant volcanoes. The Puy de Sancy, the highest point of the Massif Central at 1,885 meters, offers stunning views of the surroundings.

Various circuits allow you to explore this region, including the Tour des Lacs, which takes hikers through glacial valleys, mountain lakes, and forests. It's a more accessible hike than the GR20 or TMB, making it an ideal destination for beginners.

Hikes in Belgium

Hoëgne Valley (Ardennes)

The Hoëgne Valley, located in the Belgian Ardennes, is a must-see for nature lovers. This trail follows the Hoëgne River, winding through a dense forest and offering a variety of landscapes, from waterfalls to spectacular rock formations. The 10 km hike is relatively easy and suitable for everyone, with several wooden bridges and viewpoints along the river.

This circuit is especially delightful in autumn when the trees turn golden and the atmosphere becomes almost magical. If you’re in Belgium in the coming weeks, I highly recommend a trip to the Ardennes!

Hautes Fagnes Plateau

The Hautes Fagnes Plateau, located on the border between Belgium and Germany, is Belgium’s largest nature reserve. This vast plateau, covered with peat bogs, is unique and offers marked trails for hikers. The climate here is often cooler and wetter than in the rest of the country, giving the landscape a mysterious atmosphere.

The hike to Signal de Botrange, Belgium's highest point at 694 meters, is a must. Wooden walkways allow you to cross the marshy areas while preserving this fragile ecosystem.

GR 57 - Ourthe Trail

The GR 57, or Ourthe Trail, is a long-distance hike that follows the Ourthe River through the Belgian Ardennes. This 290 km trail is perfect for those looking to explore charming villages, dense forests, and peaceful valleys.

You can, of course, opt to hike just a section of the GR 57 if you don’t want to tackle the whole trail. The stretch between La Roche-en-Ardenne and Houffalize is particularly popular for its wild landscapes and impressive views over the Ourthe Valley.

Malchamps Fens

Located near Spa, the Malchamps Fens offer trails through heathland and peat bogs, characteristic of this region. The 9 km loop through the nature reserve is relatively easy and suitable for hikers of all levels. The open landscapes and views of the fens make this a peaceful and refreshing hike.

Whether you're drawn to the rugged mountains of France or the green landscapes of Belgium, these two countries offer unforgettable hiking experiences. From the majesty of the French Alps to the mysteries of Belgium's Hautes Fagnes, each region has its own charm and is worth exploring on foot. So, lace up your hiking boots and set out on an adventure to discover these beautiful territories!
