In this blog post, I would like to share with you a song by one of all-time favourite Polish artists, Maryla Rodowicz, whom I briefly introduced to you in one of my blog posts. Rozmowa przez ocean (‘A conversation across the ocean’) was released in 1987 and touches upon one of very common themes in Poles’ life at the time - immigration. The subject receives a letter from an old friend, who now lives across the ocean. She ponders the differences between their respective lives and how they changed - hers by staying in Poland, and his - after moving abroad. As a warm-up, I would like you to listen to the song - first just listen and try to catch some familiar words, then listen to it again and try to fill the gaps. The missing words are in their basic dictionary form - nouns in Nominative, singular or plural, the verbs are in present tense singular, even if you’re just a beginner you should catch some of them. Many phrases are repeated across the song and you will hear some of the words over and over, the pace is also quite slow, so you won’t need to pause the song all the time.
