Proper equipment is important.. and it is expensive. As a beginner you might not want to spend all your savings to check you are a natural at cross country skiing.
Luckily there are several non-profit organizations that rents out equipent to youth for free! The biggest one is BUA, and it is located in multiple cities around the country.
