Hello and Happy Winter! 

December is here, and with it the cold and magic of winter celebrations! So, it is about time we learn how to have a conversation in Romanian when doing any sort of winter activities. We'll cover basic vocabulary, some conversation starters, and useful phrases for enjoying the winter season. Ready? Let’s go!

The Basic Vocabulary

  • winter = iarnă
  • snow = zăpadă
  • snowman = om de zăpadă
  • ice skating = patinaj
  • skiing = schi
  • snowboarding = snowboarding
  • hot chocolate = ciocolată caldă
  • warm= cald
  • cold = rece
  • scarf = fular
  • gloves= mănuși
  • hat = căciulă
  • sledge = sanie
  • fireplace = șemineu
  • holiday = vacanță

Conversation at an Ice Skating Rink

"Hello! Can I rent a pair of ice skates?” Bună ziua! Pot închiria o pereche de patine?

"Yes, of course! What size do you need?” Da, desigur! Ce mărime aveți nevoie?

“I need a size 38, please.” Am nevoie de mărimea 38, vă rog.

“Here you go. Enjoy your time!” Poftim. Distracție plăcută! 

Conversation at a Ski Resort

“Good morning! I would like to rent ski equipment.” Bună dimineața! Aș dori să închiriez echipament de schi.

“Good morning! Do you need a full set or just skis?” Bună dimineața! Aveți nevoie de un set complet sau doar de schiuri?

“A full set, please.” Un set complet, vă rog.

“Do you need an instructor?” Aveți nevoie de un instructor?

“No, thank you. I can manage on my own.” Nu, mulțumesc. Mă descurc singur.

“Alright, have fun on the slopes!” În regulă, distracție plăcută pe pârtii!

Practice Phrases   

1. “It’s very cold outside, wear your gloves!” Este foarte frig afară, poartă mănușile!

2. “Let’s go to the winter market this evening.” Hai să mergem la piața de Crãciun diseară.   

3. “Do you want to go sledding tomorrow?” Vrei să mergem sa ne dam cu sania mâine?

4. “The hot chocolate is delicious!” Ciocolata caldă este delicioasă!
