On the 6th of December, Slovaks celebrate St. Nicolaus Day, known locally as Mikuláš. This tradition has its roots in the story of St. Nicholas, a generous 4th-century bishop who secretly gave gifts to those in need. The night before, children leave their boots by the door or window, hoping to wake up to them filled with sweets, fruits, or small toys. But for those who haven’t been well-behaved, Mikuláš’s helpers might leave a small piece of coal instead!
Today, this custom is still very popular in Slovakia, with festive events taking place in towns and cities, or even schools. Costumed Mikuláš figures often appear alongside angels and devils, creating a fun atmosphere, especially for children.
