Gött is originally a word from Gothenburg, but it’s currently spreading beyond the city's borders.

Gött: Pronounced as [gœtː]

Ha de gött! roughly means "Have a good one!", but gött is not just a "good one", it means to really enjoy yourself.

Example:

Fy fan va gött! (God damn, that’s great!)

Här sitter ni och har det gött… (Look at you guys enjoying yourselves…)

Det var gött att träffa dig igen! (It was nice to see you again!)

Standard translations would give you "nice" or "good," but as you have seen gött can also have a slight gloating quality. Though that is true, the heart of gött is an expression of Gothenburg's joie de vivre.

Most Swedes like Gothenburg and its people. When they hear you are from Gothenburg, people often make nice comments. Gothenburgers are often described as jovial and welcoming people who do not take themselves too seriously.

Example:

Vi ses sen då? – Jajamen, gött! (See you later then? – Yep, sounds good!)

Du klarade tentan! – "Gött! (You passed the exam! – Nice!)

Vad gött att det äntligen är helg! (It’s so nice that it’s finally the weekend!)

You and your friends can also have it göttigt. Göttigt is when your life is just pure enjoyment. If you are talking about food, göttigt is the equivalent of "yummy".

Listen to the song Gött å leva by comedy group Galenskaparna & After Shave from western Sweden for the real pronunciation. It's a song about the small enjoyments of life and includes the line det ska va gött å leva annars kan de vita, which means "life should be nice; otherwise, it doesn't matter".

Example:

Den här chokladen är göttig! (This chocolate is yummy!)

Jag känner mig så göttig efter att ha tränat. (I feel so good after working out.)

Jag älskar att koppla av på helgerna, det känns så göttigt. (I love relaxing on weekends, it feels so nice.)
