One of the most magical experiences in Iceland is witnessing the Northern Lights (norðurljósin) dancing across the sky. But where’s the best place to see them without leaving the capital area? Fortunately, there are plenty of great spots in and around the capital that offer minimal light pollution and stunning views of the aurora borealis.
Here are a few well-known watchspots:
Seltjarnarnes – A quiet, coastal area with open skies and less artificial light. The lighthouse at Grótta is a local favorite for aurora watching!
Álftanes – Located just outside the city, this peninsula offers darker skies and beautiful reflections of the lights over the water.
Heiðmörk – A peaceful nature reserve on the outskirts of Reykjavík, free from city lights and perfect for a nighttime adventure.
