How to Cope with Loneliness Abroad

Moving to a new country for your mobility programme is for sure a big adventure! While exploring new places, trying new foods, and meeting new people is super exciting, it's completely normal to feel lonely sometimes - name it homesickness, or simply missing your life at home. Being away from family and friends can be tough, but don't worry, there are plenty of ways to make your new home feel just as warm and welcoming.
I've done two mobility programmes (a short Erasmus+ and a six months ESC experience), and here are my tips for when you miss home:
1.Stay in touch with loved ones
Thanks to technology, staying connected with family and friends has never been easier! Video calls, chats, and social media can help bridge the distance. Sometimes, just hearing a familiar voice can make a huge difference.
2. Make new friends
It can feel intimidating at first, but building a new social circle is one of the best ways to beat loneliness. Join local groups, attend meetups, or take part in community events. Many cities have expat groups where you can find people in the same boat. Here are some tips on how to make friends while doing your mobility in Romania.
3. Find activities you love
Doing what makes you happy will help you feel more at home. Whether it’s a dance class, a hiking group, or a cooking workshop, finding a hobby keeps you engaged and introduces you to like-minded people. Plus, it’s a great way to make memories in your new country.
4. Explore your surroundings
The more you explore, the more familiar and comfortable your new environment will feel. Visit popular spots, and places where only the locals go, try the local cuisine, and learn about the culture.
5. Take care of your mental well-being
Feeling lonely can take a toll on your mental health, so self-care is key. Try journaling, meditation, or simply taking a walk in nature to clear your mind. If you find that loneliness is really getting to you, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional support.
6. Set goals and stay motivated
Having a purpose makes a big difference. Whether it’s improving your language skills with OLS, growing your career, or picking up a new skill, setting goals keeps you focused and motivated. Even small achievements can boost your confidence and make your experience abroad more fulfilling.
7. Get involved in volunteering activities
Helping others is a fantastic way to feel more connected. Look for volunteer opportunities at local charities, schools, or community centers. Not only will you be making a difference, but you’ll also meet kind-hearted people who share your values.
8. Embrace the journey
Loneliness is just a part of the adjustment period, but it won’t last forever. See it as an opportunity to grow, learn, and discover new things about yourself. Keep an open mind, be patient, and soon enough, you’ll find your rhythm. Before you know it, your new country will start to feel like home.
Adapting to life abroad takes time, but you’re not alone in this journey. Stay in touch with loved ones, make new friends, explore, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Remember, every challenge is a stepping stone to something amazing.
Feel free to use the OLS platform to connect with people in the same boat as you, and don’t hesitate to leave a comment or reach out to me if you need any advice!
