Užgavėnės is one of Lithuania's oldest and most vibrant holidays, filled with rich traditions, rituals, and customs, all aimed at bidding farewell to winter and celebrating the arrival of spring. With a fascinating blend of culture and fun, it’s a festive occasion that’s as lively as it is meaningful.
Masks, Costumes, and Mythical Figures
A key feature of Užgavėnės are the iconic costumed figures, often dressed in colorful outfits and masks, representing mythological characters. Today, they bring a magical atmosphere to the celebration, blending ancient beliefs with the joy of modern festivities.
The Burning of the Morė – A Symbolic Goodbye to Winter
One of the most memorable rituals of Užgavėnės is the “burning of the Morė,” a figure made of straw and old clothes. When set on fire, it symbolizes the end of winter and the welcoming of spring. The ritual has deep symbolic roots, representing a fresh start, the end of harsh weather, and the promise of warmth and abundance to come.
Kids, Songs, and Pancakes – A Fun Tradition
What is also interesting about Užgavėnės is the tradition where kids go door-to-door, sing songs, and ask for pancakes or candies. It's not as popular anymore, but when I was a kid, we used to do it every year, just like kids do nowadays for Halloween. It's a charming way for the young ones to take part in the festivities and add a sense of community spirit.
Festivities, Music, and Dance
Užgavėnės is also a time for dancing, music, and letting go of the winter blues. Villages and towns come alive with the sounds of violins, bagpipes, and drums, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness. It’s a time to lift your spirits, reconnect with neighbors, and celebrate the change of season with the whole community.
Experience the Best of Užgavėnės
If you're eager to experience Užgavėnės in all its glory, the official celebration will take place on Tuesday, March 4. However, for a truly authentic experience, head to Rumšiškės, the National Open Air Museum near Kaunas, on March 1. They always host the most vibrant Mardi Gras-style feast, complete with traditional rituals, music, and food. You can find the full program.
And don’t forget to learn the most popular Užgavėnės slogan: “Žiema, žiema, bėk iš kiemo!” ("Winter, winter, get out of the yard!").
Food, Feasts, and Traditions
Food plays a major role in Užgavėnės, with hearty dishes that symbolize the shedding of winter and the welcoming of spring. Think pancakes, sausages, rich meat dishes, and delicious cakes – all shared in a spirit of abundance and celebration.
Užgavėnės and Its Global Cousins
Užgavėnės shares many similarities with carnivals celebrated around the world, such as those in Brazil, Italy, and other parts of Europe. Like Lithuania’s festival, these celebrations mark the end of winter and the arrival of spring with vibrant costumes, music, dancing, and festive energy. Whether in Germany, France, or Spain, each culture has its own take on these seasonal festivals, but they all share the same goal: to bid farewell to the cold and embrace the warmth of the new season.
Truly yours,
