As Erasmus participants in Slovakia, spending time in local cafés can be a great way to get a feel for the country’s culture. Cafés here offer a relaxed environment for socializing, studying, or simply enjoying a break between classes. Whether you’re in the bustling streets of Bratislava or a smaller town, you’ll notice that café culture plays an important role in daily life.

You might visit for a quick espresso (espresso in Slovak), a longer break with a cappuccino (cappuccino), or even to enjoy a Slovak dessert like štrúdľa (strudel) or koláč (cake). Here are some useful phrases when ordering:

  • Dobrý deň, prosím si kávu. (Good day, I’d like a coffee, please.)

  • Chcel/a by som cappuccino. (I would like a cappuccino.)

  • Môžem zaplatiť kartou? (Can I pay by card?)

  • Môžete mi odporučiť niečo tradičné? (Can you recommend something traditional?)

If you enjoy exploring, you might notice each café has its own unique character. In Slovakia, some cafés offer local flavors and traditional treats, while others blend modern trends like plant-based milk alternatives or international coffee options.

Do you know any good cafés in the city where you're on your Erasmus mobility?
