Dear community,

This discussion is for all of you in this community who have lived abroad in past, are living abroad as we speak, or perhaps have travelled for an extended period of time. As we have such a broad range of background and collection experiences in this community, I would love to learn about your most surprising cultural discovery while living abroad or staying abroad!

Whether you have an anecdote of an encounter to share, a surprising idiom or expression in a foreign language, or a food that was nothing like the food you eat in your hometown, I'd love to hear from you!

I'm very much looking forward to hearing about your experience abroad!

One of the things I discovered while traveling around Romania was that older people in Romania were working in jobs such as electrical and mechanical instead of resting. It was really surprising.

While living in Japan, I noticed how reliable and convenient the public transport is. It's a bit expensive, but I'm totally fine with that compared to Germany, where trains are constantly late or canceled entirely.

I've never lived abroad, but I did travel abroad a few years ago! I went to Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country near Vietnam (which took 2 hours flying). One thing about the eating out culture I think I'd never tried before when I was in Vietnam, is the food courts. They had food courts with different types of food and gathered around an area, and the tables were shared, which means you could grab a dish at court 1 and have another dish at court 2 and eat together at the tables, so it was a diverse and fun experience for me!
Besides, the milk tea in Malaysia was amazing. It was rich in taste, buttery, and very aromatic. I think that was the best drink I've ever had in Malaysia!
