Labas everyone!

As March 25 is the Day of European Authors, let's talk about Lithuanian ones.

Lithuania has a rich literary tradition, blending history, surrealism, and deep psychological insights. While classic authors like Kristijonas Donelaitis and Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas shaped the foundations of Lithuanian literature, modern and contemporary writers have brought fresh, bold perspectives to the literary world.

If you’re looking for Lithuanian authors to explore, here are some great names to start with:

Ričardas Gavelis – Vilnius Poker (a dark, surreal take on Soviet-era Lithuania)
Jurga Ivanauskaitė – Placebo, The Witch and the rain (a mix of spirituality, feminism, and modern life). This writer is one of my all-time favorites!
Giedra Radvilavičiūtė – Those Whose Doors I Have Knocked (sharp and witty essays)
Kristina Sabaliauskaitė – Silva Rerum (a gripping historical novel series)
Tomas Venclova – (poetry and essays with a strong European influence)
Alvydas Šlepikas – In the Shadow of Wolves (a powerful novel about post-war refugees)

Have you read any Lithuanian authors? Which books left an impression on you? Do you have any recommendations for those who are new to Lithuanian literature? Let’s discuss!

Truly yours,
