Dear language learners,
An important element of any achievable goal is that it is measurable (read: Setting SMART goals). Why? Because only when a goal is measurable can you effectively keep track of your progress.
For example, simply setting the goal ‘learn vocabulary in May’ won’t be very effective. With a goal like this, you won’t know if you’ve succeeded: does learning just one new word count, or do you need to learn one hundred? This is why you need to incorporate ‘what success looks like’ within the goal by making it measurable.
Here are some examples of measurable goals:
Learn vocabulary for 30 minutes 3 times a week
Learn 5 new words every week in May
Read 1 newspaper article a week in a language you are studying, write down and learn the words that are new to you
Now it’s your turn: if you haven’t already done so, take our Keeping Track of Progress quiz according to the English course you are enrolled in here: A1, A2, B1, B2. Then reflect on how measurable your goals are:
Are you keeping track of your learning progress? If so, in what way?
Does the method you choose help you to stay motivated?
If you read how another learner measures their goals, and you think of another method they could explore, let them know! This is how we build an encouraging community together :-)
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Warmly,
Marieke, Community Manager - ENGLISH
