May is a month full of long weekends and public holidays in many European countries—including Slovakia. For Erasmus students, it’s often a great chance to take a break from classes, explore new places, or simply slow down and enjoy the spring weather.
In Slovakia, the month also begins with a local tradition called "stavanie mája"—the raising of a decorated tree or pole (usually on April 30 or May 1), often as a symbol of love or to welcome spring. You might have seen one standing in a village square or near a school or town hall.
Some Erasmus participants use this time to go on short trips, hike, or visit local festivals. Others take the chance to relax and enjoy the more peaceful side of their host town.
What about you—have you noticed any May traditions in Slovakia? How do you usually spend your public holidays—traveling, resting, or both?
