For many Europeans, this day is a symbol of coming together beyond borders, cultures, and histories. Why 9 May? It marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration – a bold and visionary proposal made in 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. His idea was simple but powerful: countries in Europe should work together to make war between them not only unthinkable, but impossible.
This was the first step toward creating what we now know as the European Union. In 2025, Europe Day is especially important – we are celebrating 75 years since the Schuman Declaration. That’s 75 years of working together to build peace, protect shared values, and grow stronger as a community.
Whether you're living in Europe or just learning about it as you study Macedonian, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the history behind the EU and the man whose ideas helped make it all possible.
