ÄITIENPÄIVÄ - 11 toukokuuta, 2025
Mother's Day is an import from the United States. The day arrived to Finland in 1918 through teacher Vilho Reiman. He aimed to support widows and their children after the difficult events that happened at that time.
History
The roots of Mother's Day trace back to the United States. The first events resembling Mother's Day were celebrated in the 1870s, initiated by activists mourning their fallen soldiers. One of these activists was Ann Reeves Jarvis, whose daughter, Anna Jarvis, is regarded as the creator of the modern Mother's Day.
The death of Anna Jarvis's mother inspired her to organize the first Mother's Day event in 1908. The day gained popularity, and in 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson declared it an official holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Soon after, Mother's Day became a significant commercial season and spread worldwide. In Finland, we celebrate the day in honor of all mothers according to the American tradition on the second Sunday of May.
Mother's Day became an official flag day in 1947.
