Hi friends.

What are you doing in your mobility program? Are you an intern at a company? A student in university? Changing your career and learning new skills?

Below, you will learn common phrases used in professional English to use to speak about your mobility experience.

First, we'll start with some vocabulary and then get into expressions:

VOCABULARY

Apprentice: A person who learns a job or skill by working for a fixed period of time for someone who is very good at that job or skill. (noun)

Career: A profession for which one trains; a job or series of jobs that you do during your working life. (noun)

Intern: A student or recent graduate who works for a period of time at a job in order to get experience. (noun)

Now, let's get into some common questions and responses often asked in professional or academic settings.

WORK

Where do you work?

  • I work at (a company).
  • I work for (a company / a specific person)
  • I work in (a place, city, country, department, or general area/industry)
  • I work with (people / things)

How to use the correct preposition:

I work in…

a place:

  • I work in an office.
  • I work in a school.
  • I work in a factory.

a city/country:

  • I work in Milan.
  • I work in Italy.

a particular department:

  • I work in the Research & Development department.
  • I work in human resources.
  • I work in marketing.

a general area or industry:

  • I work in education.
  • I work in environmental research.
  • I work in sports management.

I work with…

  • I work with computers.
  • I’m a coach. I work with athletes.

I work for... or I work at...

  • I work at Starbucks. I work for Starbucks.
  • I work at the mall.
  • I work for my parents.
  • I work for the New York Mets.

INTERNSHIPS

Where do you intern? -Or- Where are you interning?

Similar to the structure for talking about Work, you can use the following to speak about your internship.

  • I intern at...
  • I intern with
  • I intern for

Often in conversation, English speakers use phrasing like:

  • I’m interning at…a specific business.

Ex.: I’m interning at Essence Magazine

  • I’m interning for a… general industry or business

Ex.: I’m interning for an environmental law firm.

  • I’m interning with… a person

Ex.: I’m interning with Oprah for 3 months.

STUDYING

What do you study?

Often answered by stating the specific subject you are learning and where it is being learned.

  • I study…subject at… name of school.
  • I am studying…subject at… name of school.

Ex.: I study Energy and Environmental Physics at the University of the West Indies

Ex.: I am studying electrical engineering at Howard University

Now, that you’ve learned a few common expressions in professional and business English, take a look at these example statements before sharing yours.

Internship Example:

I began my mobility program in October 2022. I intern at a shipping firm in Stockholm and I’m learning about logistics. My internship is ends in January, so I’m really making the most out of my experience by assisting my colleagues on their projects, taking on new responsibilities and I even make sure to have lunch with my peers so we can get to know each other more informally too.

Career Change Example:

After a 14-year career as a car mechanic, I am now studying business management because I want to own several garages.

Apprenticeship Example:

I am an apprentice with an organic, biodynamic regenerative farmer. Using practical skills directly on the land is the best way for me to test agricultural ideas and theories. I’m also learning the business management side of regenerative agriculture because I will purchase land and manage my own small farm one day.

Thesis Period

by Baturalp Kuyucuk -

I joined the mobility program in April 2022. I had the opportunity to do research on my master's thesis at Mainz University in Germany. In Mainz, I learned new methods of research and bibliography. I had the opportunity to improve my foreign language. I would definitely recommend Mainz University to all students, especially in the field of history, to do research during the master's and thesis process.

Hi Baturalp!

Thank you for sharing your mobility experience with us! I’m curious to learn about some of the churches you researched and any who’s history you found particularly Intriguing. I imagine that your research takes you all over Europe as the history of churches in Europe is so vast!

Hello! I will start my internship at the beggining of April in Ireland, Im studying a degree of sports in Spain and Im very excited to go to Ireland for a lot of reasons, one of the most stronger of them is that I will comeback to Spain knowing better this language (English) and that will open me a lot of doors, talking about work and that things.. but I want to go too for the experience, met new people and other culture and work in something that I like, Im counting everyday cause one day more is one day less haha

Hahaha! I 100% understand your excitement to go to Ireland, Leonidas!

I've been to Ireland many times, particularly in the region of County Kerry near the Dingle Peninsula. Where in Ireland will you go?

I find the Irish to be very warm, welcoming, and great conversationalists!

My friend will get married in May, so that will be the next time I go to Ireland. And, as you say, I'm also counting the days because "one day more is one day less" to wait before I can go back to that beautiful country!

Also, please know that there will be more content to help practice speaking professional English, so let me know if you have any questions or want resources that will help you speak about work & professional life. I'm always glad to help. :)

Have a great day,
Iya

Oh my goodness, Leonidas! I hope you will get good news from the company!! We are sending you positive vibes from the English Community!!

And don't worry about being "late" answering! You weren't late at all. Your life sounds quite busy, in fact, so thanks for taking a moment to come back to us to give a little update. :)

By the way, I still have to learn how to drive, so if you have any tips to share, feel free! Hahaha!

We look forward to hearing your news and I wish you all the best. :)

Hi everyone! I am a Primary teacher who joined the program in February 2021. Our school applied for a project and was granted with different mobilities by teachers' staff. I had the opportunity to visit Dublin, first, and Rome, then, to improve my english and acquire abilities and skills related to team and pupils management, increasing motivation and gamification and learning techniques, in order to adapt and apply then in our centre. It was a life long learning and a mind-changing experience because it affected me positively in two ways: it broadened my mind and created tight bonds with different cultures and colleagues from abroad, and second, it let me the opportunity to see in context and receive a real didactic knowledge directly from the field. Erasmus has changed my life and since then I am thoroughly involved in working in internasionalisation of the education and constructing European awareness. I would definitely recommend it to every teacher ^^

Wow, Ivan! You're like an ambassador for the Erasmus Program. Can we recruit you?! Hahaha! I'm just joking, but seriously; your testimonial is precisely what we hope the mobility experience will be for our participants!

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful experience as a teacher in the Erasmus program. It was a pleasure to read and I hope it inspires others. It has certainly inspired me! :)

I'm curious to know more about how you're involved with the internationalization of education and constructing European awareness. Are you part of a group or an organization tasked with this mission?

As luck would have it, I came across this delightful bit of information that perhaps you might find interesting: The European Education Area (EEA). Have you heard of them?

They're committed to fostering "collaboration among EU Member States to build more resilient and inclusive national education and training systems."

Here's their link if you're interested to know more: https://education.ec.europa.eu/about-eea

Tell me what you think about them! And definitely feel free to share any other international education programs that you are aware of. :D

Wishing you a lovely day,
Iya
