Január általában az új év kezdetéről, az újrakezdésről és hát a hideg időjárásról (idén a hóesésről is!) szól, de Magyarországon ilyenkor van egy különleges okunk az ünneplésre a hónap vége felé, ugyanis január 22-én ünnepeljük a Magyar Kultúra Napját. De vajon miért pont ekkor, és mi is a jelentősége ennek a napnak?

Egy kézirat, amely mindent megváltoztatott

A történet 1823-ig nyúlik vissza. Ezen a napon fejezte be a magyar irodalom egyik legnagyobb alakja, Kölcsey Ferenc, a Himnusz kéziratát. Ez a vers később Erkel Ferenc zenéjével vált Magyarország nemzeti himnuszává.

A Himnusz nem csupán egy dal: ez a magyar nép történelmének, fájdalmának és reményének sűrítménye. Ha megérted a szavait, megérted a magyar „bús-vigadó” mentalitást is – azt a különleges képességet, hogy a nehézségekben is megtaláljuk a szépséget. Bár a vers már több mint kétszáz éves, magát az ünnepet viszonylag „fiatalnak” mondhatjuk: hivatalosan 1989 óta ünnepeljük meg minden évben.

Az ünnep célja, hogy emlékeztessen minket: a kultúra az, ami összeköti a múltat a jelennel – és bennünket is egymással.

Miért más ez a nap? Szokások és hangulat

Ez a nap nem munkaszüneti nap, mégis más a hangulata, mint egy átlagos csütörtöknek.

  • A figyelem napja: Ilyenkor a híradók, a közösségi média és az utcai plakátok nem a politikáról vagy a gazdaságról, hanem a művészetekről, a könyvekről és a tudományról szólnak.

  • Kitüntetések és gálák: Ezen a napon adják át a legrangosabb állami kulturális díjakat. Országszerte ünnepi műsorokat rendeznek, ahol a legnevesebb művészek lépnek fel.

  • Közös szavalás: Gyakori szokás az iskolákban, tereken vagy online közösségekben, hogy délután egy adott időpontban ezrek szavalják el egyszerre a Himnuszt vagy más hires magyar verseket.

  • Nyitott kapuk: Ezen a napon ráadásul sok olyan helyszín is megnyílik a nagyközönség előtt, ami egyébként nehezebben elérhető.

January is usually about the start of a new year, new beginnings, and cold weather (and snowfall this year!), but in Hungary, we have a special reason to celebrate towards the end of the month, as January 22 is the Day of Hungarian Culture. But why exactly then, and what is the significance of this day?
A manuscript that changed everything
The story dates back to 1823. On this day, one of the greatest figures in Hungarian literature, Ferenc Kölcsey, finished the manuscript of the Hungarian national anthem. This poem later became Hungary's national anthem with music by Ferenc Erkel.
The national anthem is not just a song: it is a distillation of the history, pain, and hope of the Hungarian people. If you understand its words, you will also understand the Hungarian "bús-vigadó" mentality—the special ability to find beauty even in difficult times. Although the poem is more than two hundred years old, the holiday itself is relatively "young": we have been celebrating it officially every year since 1989.
The purpose of the holiday is to remind us that culture is what connects the past with the present – and us with each other.
Why is this day different? Customs and atmosphere
This day is not a public holiday, yet the atmosphere is different from that of an average Thursday.
It is a day of attention: at this time, the news, social media, and street posters are not about politics or the economy, but about the arts, books, and science.
Awards and galas: The most prestigious state cultural awards are presented on this day. Festive programs are organized throughout the country, featuring performances by the most renowned artists.
Joint recitation: It is a common custom in schools, squares, and online communities for thousands of people to recite the national anthem or other famous Hungarian poems at a specific time in the afternoon.
Open doors: On this day, many venues that are otherwise difficult to access are opened to the general public.

Where to go this week? – National program guide
In 2026, Hungarian Culture Day (Thursday, January 22) promises to be particularly exciting, as many venues will open their doors as part of a nationwide series of programs. Choose from the best options:
Budapest and its surroundings
Free museum visits: On this day, most major institutions (such as the Museum of Ethnography, the National Museum, and the Petőfi Literary Museum) can be visited free of charge or for a nominal fee. A great opportunity for an afternoon of discovery!
Hangfoglaló Mini Festival (Turbina): If you are interested in modern Hungarian music, you can get to know 12 up-and-coming Hungarian bands in a single evening.
