Tere tulemast! Welcome!

My name is Ingrid, I’m the OLS Estonian Community Manager and I am so excited to kick-start this language learning journey with you!

This “Ask the Community” forum has been created for questions related to the usage of OLS such as the placement test or the various forums in our community.

You can also ask anything related to the Estonian language in general. In case anything is unclear, I encourage you to ask for advice from other members and from OLS community managers as well.

Don't forget to have a look at the guidelines of the OLS Netiquette and Forum Rules so we can all enjoy our time learning Estonian together.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Ingrid, OLS Community Manager – Estonian

Is it easy to learn Estonian for English and Turkish speakers?

Tere, Ender! Thank you for your question.

If you look online, then many articles point out that Estonian is indeed hard to learn for English native speakers mainly due to the 14 cases.

However, many Estonian words have Germanic roots (and English is a Germanic language) and Estonian is phonetic, which means the written form of words mostly correspond to the pronunciation.

When it comes to Turkish speakers, it might be easier to understand Estonian grammar faster, because the languages are both agglutinative and words are formed by adding morphemes. Here's a short example:
Me - mina - ben
With me - minuga - benimle

On top of that, Estonian and Turkish share many special sounds - such as õ (ı), ö and ü.

Have a look at the lesson Tere, Tallinn under the Estonian courses here on OLS. The teacher explains many of these similarities there too. There are many more parallels between English or Turkish and Estonian which you can discover while learning.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Aitäh Ingrid!! I appreciate your detailed response. Yeah, Estonian grammar structure seems easier to understand. I’ll check the lesson. I am interested to learn Estonian. Thanks again!
