Spring has arrived! Astonishing places of nature around Lithuania you must experience!

Dear Lithuanian language community members! Sveiki!

As winter is now over, we might expect more and more sunny days to come in the near future. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to some of the most well-known places of nature around Lithuania, which you should explore in upcoming months.

Curonian Spit (Kuršių nerija)

This quite unique stretch of land between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea is perhaps the best known Lithuanian piece of nature. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, Curonian Spit is loved both by locals and visitors from around the globe. Here you will find breathtaking sand dunes, endless forests and will have an opportunity to visit four towns – Nida, Preila, Pervalka and Juodkrante (Juodakrantė).

As this spit is not connected to the mainland by bridge or tunnel, visitors are supposed to take the ferry at Klaipeda (Klaipėda). I strongly suggest to use the opportunity and explore this city as well!

While most locals are visiting Curonian Spit in summer, with beaches along the Baltic coast being crowded during sunny days, it is well worth visiting this place each season, as you will get a chance to experience it differently every time.

You can chek the essential information and rules of visiting here:

State cultural reserve of Kernave (Kernavė)

This reserve, located just about hours journey away from city of Vilnius, contains five hillforts, which were part of the medieval city of Kernave (Kernavė), one of historical capitals of Lithuanian Grand Duchy.

This is an ideal location for those, who enjoy both historical and nature sites, as it offers an opportunity to get a glance on how Lithuania’s history developed over the centuries while enjoying a walk nearby the Pajauta Valley on the right bank Neris river.

You can check information about the reserve, trails and museums here:

Labanoras Regional Park (Labanoro regioninis parkas)

Lithuania’s biggest regional park (covering a territory of 553.18 km²), it offers an opportunity to explore its widespread forests and more than 70 lakes. Being a popular tourist destination, it is loved by locals, who are coming to Labanoras each year for camping, hiking or swimming. During the months of summer and autumn, this park is also attracting berry and mushroom pickers.

If you have ever dreamed about spending the night camping and star gazing besides the lake, or was looking for hiking trail outside major cities, this is a place to go. Located in the eastern part of the country, this park is most easily accessible by taking a bus or train ride from Vilnius, but it can be reached from other Lithuanian cities by a bus as well.

Before coming, make sure to read the rules on the visiting here:

Have you visited one of these places already? Or maybe you would like to offer some other spots? Let’s talk about it in Living Abroad forum.
