Dear community members,

Today is a special day in Lithuania.

33 years ago, on 11th of March 1990, one of the most important documents in Lithuania’s history has been signed - Act of the Re-Establishment of the State.

After World War II, Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, which suppressed Lithuanian culture and language and imposed a communist regime. However, in the late 1980s, the Soviet Union began to undergo significant political changes, and Lithuania seized the opportunity to declare its independence.

On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania declared the restoration of Lithuania's independence, marking the end of over 50 years of Soviet rule. This declaration was a historic moment for Lithuania and sparked a wave of similar declarations by other Soviet republics, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Day of Restoration of Independence is celebrated throughout Lithuania with various events and activities, including speeches by political leaders, cultural events, and public gatherings. It is an important day for Lithuanians to reflect on their history and to celebrate their country's freedom and sovereignty.

All around the country, commemorations will be taking place, so do not miss the opportunity to check it out! If you are staying in Vilnius, there is a unique opportunity to visit the building of Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas). There are going to be many other celebratory events around the whole city. You can check the schedule of events here (in Lithuanian):
