Vėlinės and its importance in Lithuanian culture

Dear community members,

Sveiki!

In today’s blogpost I will be covering a topic of the important Lithuanian celebration – Vėlinės.

During the first days of November, locals have been visiting cemeteries to pay respects to those who passed away. Families were also gathering to spend some time together and share memories about those relatives and friends who have passed.

While it might look like a period of grief and silence, you can actually feel the special atmosphere of unity and peace all around during this time of the year. I genuinely recommend visiting cemeteries around Vilnius or other cities during the first weeks of November, as by each evening you will be able to see lots of lit candles around the place.

While locals tend to call this period simply as Vėlinės in Lithuanian language, it is actually consisting of two separate days.

On 1st of November, All Saints' Day is observed. It is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring and remembering the deceased, particularly family members and loved ones who have passed away. The observance is deeply rooted in Catholic traditions.

All Souls' Day is observed on November 2nd. This day is dedicated to remembering and honoring the souls of all the departed, not just the saints as on All Saints' Day (November 1st).

In addition to cemetery visits, it's a time for family gatherings. Many people prepare special dishes and set a place at the table for the souls of the departed. It's believed that during Vėlinės, the boundary between the living and the dead is thinner, allowing for a connection between the two realms.

Halloween, while not traditionally a Lithuanian holiday, has gained some popularity in recent years, especially among the younger generation. It is not a widely celebrated or deeply rooted cultural event compared to other countries, but you may find some Halloween-themed events, parties, and decorations in larger cities and among certain communities.

What are your experiences with such commemorations? Let‘s discuss in the community forums!

Yours,

Gytis
