Winter activities in Lithuania

Winter activities in Lithuania

Dear community members,

Greetings!

Since winter is coming soon and you might have already seen the first snow in Lithuania as well, it is a great time to review the common outdoor activities that one could try during the cold season.

Cross-Country Skiing

Winter

Lithuania's flat terrain and numerous forests make it an ideal destination for cross-country skiing. Many areas, especially in national parks, have well-maintained trails for both beginners and experienced skiers. Cross-country skiing was once actively thought at schools and might be more popular among older generations but has been regaining its popularity in recent years. It is also common to ski on the frozen lakes once the temperatures get really cold. For this purpose many skiers are taking local trains from Vilnius to Trakai where you can enjoy the incredible views of the Trakai Castle and ski at the same time! And let’s not forget warm sultinys and kibinai after:)

Winter Hiking

Winter

Exploring Lithuania's beautiful landscapes doesn't stop in winter. Hiking trails and nature reserves offer winter hiking and snowshoeing opportunities, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the tranquility of snow-covered forests and meadows. You will be able to enjoy a totally different experience when visiting national parks then in summer since everything will be covered in snow. Just make sure to have a proper hiking outfit and some tea or coffee to keep you warm during the travels.

Winter Festivals

Winter

Various winter festivals and events take place across Lithuania, featuring activities like snow sculpture contests, winter sports competitions, and cultural performances. While many of these festivals are taking place in December before the Christmas, you also can participate in the traditional celebration of Užgavėnės, that takes place in late winter. Its celebration marks the upcoming spring season and awakening of the nature after the freezing winter temperatures. People dress in masks and costumes, and various processions, games, and activities are organized. Pancakes, known as "blynai" in Lithuanian are a traditional food during Užgavėnės.

Sauna and swimming in ice water

Winter

In Lithuania, saunas, or "pirtis" in Lithuanian, hold a special place in the culture, and their use is often accompanied by specific traditions, particularly during the winter months. People may gather in saunas to mark the changing of the seasons, celebrate the return of longer days, and engage in rituals that symbolize renewal. Sauna experience in Lithuania might involve a refreshing plunge into ice-cold water, typically a natural body of water like a lake or a pond. For this activity you might want to check for sauna enthusiast groups on social media or organize a group of friends and rent a holiday house in the countryside.

Would you like to try any of these activities during your exchange semester? Let’s discuss!

Yours,

Gytis
