Module 1 - Estimation of measurement uncertainty

Why do we need uncertainty?

One reason is that we need to know the quality of our results and if they are fit for purpose.

The second reason is the interpretation of results: do results diverge or are they indistinguishable?

The third reason concerns the decision-making whether a result is within or outside the specifications.

Only knowledge of measurement uncertainty allows us to make confident decisions in this respect.

Finally, there are scientific reasons:

A proper measurement uncertainty budget shows that you really understand your method and gives you indications for method improvement.

Credible measurement uncertainties will increase the acceptability of the results, too.

So let´s dive deeper into this.

Module 2 - Use of CRMs to prove laboratory and method performance

Having learnt in the first module how to calculate measurement uncertainty in your laboratory, the second module provides the tools to help you understand how to make use of the added value of certified reference materials (CRMs) to prove laboratory and/or method performance.

The good news is that the tools that are presented in this module can be used in your own laboratory to demonstrate the performance of your method.

Module 3 - Making the best use of RMs

At the JRC, we do our best to produce top-quality reference materials (RMs).

Module 4 - Use of CRMs in method validation

Food in the EU is very safe.

Many measures are taken to ensure that in the EU all food marketed is safe for human consumption.

Careful analysis is performed to monitor the limit values set to ensure the safe food. However, can we be sure that the analyses are reliable?

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission develops Certified Reference Materials to support laboratories who want to check the quality of their measurement methods.

These Certified Reference Materials, or CRMs, can help laboratories to assess whether their measurements give correct results.

In order to assess the accuracy of methods and demonstrate the proficiency of laboratories, it is important to consider the measurement uncertainty as well as the metrological traceability.

In this module, we will show you how to validate a new method and how to estimate the measurement uncertainty of its results.

Module 5 - Commutability of reference materials

Now that we have been acquainted with the validation of a new method and how to estimate the uncertainty of its measurements, in this module we will focus on the commutability of reference materials.

Module 6 - Selection of reference materials

Now that we have been acquainted with the commutability of reference materials, in the next module we will look closer to the processes of the selection of reference materials.

Reference materials (RMs) and/or certified reference materials (CRMs) are not highly available due to the limited number of reference material producers.

This is also the reason why reference materials and certified reference materials are sometimes very expensive.

Therefore, the selection of reference materials plays an important role.

By the end of the module, you will have learned about all the steps to consider when selecting a certified reference material.

Module 7 - Traceability of measurement results

The traceability of the results is also essential in the work environment.

In this module, we will explain metrological traceability and its role for the comparability of measurement results.

We will also describe how certified reference materials or CRMs can be used to help you to make your results traceable.

And finally, we will tell you where you can information on metrological traceability on CRM certificates.

Module 8 - The wrap-up

Now that you have been acquainted with all the required information and materials concerning the use of reference materials and the estimation of measurement uncertainty in the previous seven modules, it is time to wrap it all up and put what you have learned into practice.
