False Friends: Your Language vs. Dutch

Dear community,

We have just published an article going into the 'false friends' between the Dutch and English language. False friends are words that are phonetically or otherwise similar in two languages, but have an entirely different meaning. An example mentioned in the blog is the word 'Worst' in Dutch meaning 'sausage', while in English it means 'of the poorest quality, or the least good or desirable'. You can read that blog here: 'Dutch vs. English: False Friends'.

In this discussion though, I'd love to learn about false friends between your native language and the Dutch language. Are there any similar words you've encountered that you thought you recognised, but had a different meaning?

Let's discuss in the comments below :-)

Looking forward to hearing form you!

Warmly,

Marieke, OLS Community Manager - Dutch
