Vabatahtlik töö vahetussemestri ajal on suurepärane võimalus kohtuda uute inimestega, avastada uusi kohti ja anda kogukonnale tagasi. Esialgu võid olla veidi ettevaatlik ja arvata, et sa pead rääkima eesti keelt vabalt või omama mingeid erilisi oskusi - kuid see pole kaugeltki nii! Osalemiseks on palju võimalusi ja üks neist on kampaania Teeme ära!, mis on kasvanud ülemaailmseks kodanikuliikumiseks.  

2008. aasta mais toimus Eestis kevadine koristus veidi teisiti. Tüüpilise väikesemahulise kodupuhastuse asemel tuli 50 000 vabatahtlikku kokku, et puhastada terve riik. Seda tehti talgutena ehk ühistööna, mis ajalooliselt koondas vabatahtlikud abilised kokku, et saada suuremad talgutööd tehtud. Nüüd kasutati seda tegevusvormi selleks, et koguda 10 000 tonni prügi ebaseaduslikest prügimägedest teede ääres ja metsades. See kõik toimus 5 tunni jooksul, samas kui tavaliselt oleks see võtnud aega 3 aastat ja maksnud 50 korda rohkem.

See ei olnud lihtsalt ühekordne asi, vaid liikumise algus. 2018. aastal korraldati kampaania raames esimene ülemaailmne koristamispäev, mille eesmärk oli kaasata võimalikult palju inimesi üle kogu maailma inimkonna ajaloo suurimale jäätmekogumispäevale. Esimene ülemaailmne koristamispäev ühendas 18 miljonit inimest 157 riigis. Viimane, 2022. aastal toimunud üritus hõlmas peaaegu 15 miljonit inimest 191 riigis.  

Siin on veel mõned lõbusad faktid:  

Sloveenia käes on praegu osalusrekord. Maailmakoristuspäeval osales peaaegu 14 protsenti kogu elanikkonnast. See oli alles algus, sest sama algatajarühm juhib Sloveeniat nüüd nulljäätmete suunas, mis on süstemaatiline muutus, mis vähendab prügitootmist peaaegu olematuks. Ljubljanast võib saada maailma esimene nulljäätmete pealinn! 

Teeme ära! World on ÜRO Keskkonnaprogrammi ja ÜRO Keskkonnaassamblee akrediteeritud liige, tehes samal ajal tihedat koostööd UNESCO ja paljude teiste partneritega.

Let's Do It! How volunteering brings people together to clean the world

Volunteering while on your exchange is a great way to meet new people, discover new places and give back to the community. You might be a bit wary at first, thinking that you might have to speak Estonian fluently or have some special skills - but this is far from the truth! There are many ways to get involved and one of them is the Let’s Do It! campaign which has grown into a global civic movement.  

In May 2008, spring cleaning happened a little bit differently in Estonia. Instead of the typical small-scale home cleaning, 50 000 volunteers came together to clean the entire country. This was done in the form of talgud or communal work, which historically brought voluntary helpers together to get some bigger farm works done. Now this form of activity was used to gather 10 000 tons of trash from illegal dumpsites on roadsides and in forests. This all happened in the span of 5 hours, while normally this would have taken 3 years and cost 50 times more.  

This was not just a one-time thing, but the beginning of a movement. In 2018, the campaign organized the first World Cleanup Day  with the aim to engage as many people across the globe as possible for the biggest waste collection day in human history. The first World Cleanup Day  united 18 million people across 157 countries. The most recent one in 2022 involved almost 15 million people in 191 countries.  

Here are some other fun facts: 

Slovenia currently holds the participation record. Almost 14 percent of the entire population participated in World Cleanup Day. That was just the start, because the same initiating group now leads Slovenia towards Zero Waste, a systematic change that will reduce production of trash close to nothing. Ljubljana might just become the first Zero Waste capital city in the world! 

Let’s Do It! World is an accredited member of the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Environment Assembly, while also working closely with UNESCO and many other partners. 

The movement is also focusing more on digital waste. They educate people about the CO2 impact of unnecessary emails, files and other types of digital waste. So don’t forget to join the digital cleanup day on 18th March! You'll find more info on that here.
