Beginners Guide To Mushroom Picking

Some people might not appreciate the rain during summer, but as autumn draws near and it’s raining, you'll often hear the Latvian phrase - "Būs sēnes!" which means that mushrooms will sprout after the rain. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend joining an experienced mushroom picker to take part in this ultimate cultural experience. However, a word of caution, mushroom picking can be perilous, as there are both edible and poisonous varieties growing in the Latvian forests. To ensure your safety, it's crucial to learn from a seasoned Latvian who can show you the ropes.

I must warn you, though, once you start mushroom picking, it becomes an addictive hobby. You might find yourself transforming from someone who isn't particularly fond of forests to eagerly waking up at 4 am just to catch the first train to the nearest mushroom-picking spot, hoping to outpace other enthusiasts and you will probably find someone already ahead of you, as you might read before – Latvians even have their own mushroom picking championship.

Now that you're aware of the potential risks and the thrill of the activity, let's delve into more details about this cherished Latvian tradition. Latvians have a deep affinity for nature, and mushrooms are considered precious gifts from the natural world. They offer a diverse range of culinary delights, including soups, stews, side dishes, and even mushroom pancakes. Many mushroom pickers also preserve their finds for the winter months by storing them in the fridge or marinating and salting them.

Among the various mushroom species, Chanterelle stands out as the perfect choice for beginners. It's not only commonly picked by Latvians but also easily recognizable due to its vibrant yellow color, making it less likely to be mistaken for a poisonous counterpart. A popular mushroom dish found in almost every Latvian kitchen is the Chanterelle sauce, served deliciously atop boiled potatoes. If you're not yet ready to venture into the woods, you can still enjoy these delightful mushrooms as they're readily available in local markets.

So, as you immerse yourself in the world of mushroom picking, remember to embrace the beauty of nature, respect its gifts, and savor the culinary wonders that this cherished Latvian tradition has to offer. Happy mushroom hunting!
