September - The Month of Poetry in Latvia
“Es esmu Dzejnieks. Valoda ir mans instruments. Dzeja ir valodas vissmalkākais audums un visdziļākā aka.” (Sandra Jurago)
“I am a poet. Language is my instrument. Poetry is the finest fabric of language and the deepest well." (Sandra Jurago)
In Latvia, September is a cherished time for poetry enthusiasts, as it is celebrated as the Month of Poetry. Rainis, whose real name was Jānis Pliekšāns, holds a revered place in the hearts of Latvians, and his presence is felt even today, as evidenced by the monument erected in his honor at the heart of Riga in Esplanade Park. Rainis, born in 1865, remains an indispensable figure in Latvian culture, with his works and contributions transcending the ages. He was politically and socially active and translated a lot of international classics to Latvian, like Faust, Shakespear and Pushkin. His poems and writings have touched the souls of countless readers, resonating with the spirit of Latvia. He is also the most translated Latvian poet, and a lot of his work is available also in English and other languages.
Broken Pines - Rainis
The towering pines near the seashore sands
The wind has broken with ruthless hands
They see the bright future they long to defend
Refusing concealment and scorning to bend:
"Although you have broken us, tyrant power
The fight is not done in this dying hour
Our very last moan hurls a challenge to fate
Each bough hissing at you, incessant in hate."
The towering pines after breaking
Will come up from the deep
Like great ships and still
Against all storms thrust a fearless breast
Against all storms ever onward they press;
"Now hurl on your billows you dark storm pride
We'll yet win the future where happiness bides
For split us you may and break us you might
But we'll win the future where dawn blazes bright!"
(Translated by - group S.C.A.L.P. as their song "Broken Pines" on the album Tears and Blood (2004))
