Every year since 2001, the European Commission and the Council of Europe celebrate the European Day of Languages (EDL) on 26 September.
The aim of this observance is to raise awareness of the wide variety of languages in Europe; advocate for cultural heritage & linguistic diversity; encourage language learning; and promote translation, interpretation and other language-related professions.
Multilingualism is one of the founding principles of the European Union (EU) and a key element of Europe's cultural identity. The EU alone has 24 official languages, and it is estimated that there are more than 225 indigenous languages scattered across the continent. In this regard, Spain boasts a prosperous linguistic landscape, with Spanish, Catalan/Valencian, Galician, Basque, Aranese, Asturleonese and Aragonese being the predominant native tongues.
Nurturing knowledge of European languages is one way of developing successful contacts between different linguistic groups, promoting intercultural understanding and planting the seeds for more tolerant and empathetic societies. Also, the more languages you speak, the more chances you have of starting a career in another EU country. Isn’t that appealing?

Throughout September and October, the European Union has organised numerous events in which you can participate. Desde el año 2001, la Comisión Europea y el Consejo de Europa celebran, cada 26 de septiembre, el Día Europeo de las Lenguas (EDL).
El objetivo de esta conmemoración es dar a conocer la gran variedad de lenguas que existen en Europa; defender el patrimonio cultural y la diversidad lingüística; y promover el aprendizaje de idiomas, la traducción, la interpretación y otras profesiones relacionadas.
El multilingüismo es uno de los principios fundadores de la Unión Europea (UE) y un elemento clave de la identidad cultural comunitaria. En la UE tenemos 24 idiomas oficiales y se calcula que existen más de 225 lenguas autóctonas repartidas por todo el continente. En este sentido, España cuenta con un amplio panorama lingüístico, en el que destacan el castellano, el catalán/valenciano, el gallego, el euskera, el aranés, el asturleonés y el aragonés.
Fomentar el conocimiento de las lenguas europeas es una forma de desarrollar contactos entre diferentes grupos lingüísticos, promover el entendimiento intercultural y plantar las semillas de sociedades más tolerantes y empáticas. Además, cuantos más idiomas dominemos, más posibilidades tendremos de embarcarnos en una carrera profesional en otro país de la UE. ¿No os resulta tentador?
