International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste: 3 ways to reduce your food waste

The United Nations General Assembly designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW). The day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the day's events are led jointly by the two organisations.

The goal is to raise awareness to the importance of the problem and its possible solutions at all levels, and to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, which targets to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains.

We Hungarians produced 25.2 kg of avoidable food waste in 2021, which is an improving trend and thus below the EU average. According to the latest data for 2020, 57 million tons of food waste is generated in the EU every year, which means 127 kg per EU citizen. Compared to Eurostat's latest report based on data from 2012, there is a decrease in all respects, when the amount of food waste per person was estimated at 173 kg.

Here are 3 tips to reduce your food waste!

Organize, check and clean your refrigerator and pantry

In order to reduce waste, it is important to load your fridge and pantry smartly: put the important things in the front, the sweets in the middle, and the excess in the back. Or you  can arrange them based on their warranty. Whichever method is used, the main thing is to use up all the food.

Always write a list

When you go to do the shopping, always take a shopping list and stick to it. This way you can avoid buying unnecessary things and even save money.

Use the leftovers

Leftovers can also be used! For example, leftover roast can be used to make a tasty sandwich. Look for new recipes on the Internet or ask your family members and Erasmus student friends, be creative in the use of food. You will find many solutions in 5 minutes.
