Five of Romania's Most Fascinating Castles (Cinci dintre cele mai fascinante castele ale României)

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Buckle up, because today we're embarking on a thrilling journey through Romania, learning about and exploring its most enchanting and mysterious castles. Let's dive into the magical castles of Romania!

1.     Bran Castle

Situated in the charming region of Transylvania, this medieval fortress has captured the imaginations of travelers for centuries. The castle's Gothic architecture is incredible, but don’t just stop here, and go visit the beautiful surroundings as well! This fall season there are many festivities happening at the castle, especially the special Halloween party that you can read more about in the Best things to do in Romania during fall blog post.

While in this region, try and find a simple dessert that I find very tasty: mãlai dulce (sweet polenta). Order it like this: “Pot avea o portie de mãlai dulce, vã rog?” which translates into: Can I please have some sweet polenta, please?

2.     Peleș Castle

You will find Peleș Castle in the picturesque town of Sinaia, one of the most popular mountain cities of Romania. In my opinon, this castle built in the late 19th century is even prettier than Bran, although it’s less well known. The architectural style is Neo-Renaissance and all the details of the interior transport you into a fairytale.

3.     Corvin Castle

Our journey continues to Corvin Castle, a magnificent Gothic-Renaissance fortress located in Hunedoara, that I talked more about in this discussion topic. I recommend getting a guided tour, so you won’t miss all the architectural details and legends that go behind it.

4.      Rasnov Citadel

Rasnov Citadel is tucked behind a rocky hill with a view of the Carpathian Mountains. It gives you a look into Romania's mediaeval past and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. The citadel was built in the 13th century and has been used by many kings as a strategic fortress throughout history.

Rasnov is a small town located near Brasov city and just a few minutes drive from Bran Castle. To get to the fortress you will need to catch a train from Bucharest (or any other city in Romania) to Brasov and then take the bus from Brasov to Rasnov. The buses run every 10-30 minutes form the auto station and you will have to buy a ticket before getting on the bus. Each ticket costs just under 1 euro.

5.     Károlyi Castle

Károlyi Castle is situated in the beautiful city of Carei, the nearest big city being Satu Mare in the North of Romania. While the castle is a marvelous architectural piece, Carei is itself called the “castle city”, which means there are plenty of activities to do around! You can visit the Dendrological park outside the castle, which is one of the oldest parks in Romania. You can also visit the crypt of the Károlyi family, if you have the courage, or relax at the thermal pools in the city.

So, pack your bags and get ready to embark on a captivating journey through Romania's most beautiful and special castles, each in unique parts of the country. Adventure awaits!
