It is time for Christmas Markets!!!

Put on your Christmas hat and warm gloves and let the Christmas spirit settle into your days. Regardless of where in Europe your mobility program is, sooner or later, you will come across one of the beautiful Christmas markets that are organized in more and more places across the Old Continent with each passing year.

The history of Christmas markets dates back centuries. In the Middle Ages, the precursor to what we now understand as a "Christmas market" was born. Christmas markets are a typical German tradition.

In recent years, the tradition of organizing markets has reached Bulgaria. More and more cities within the country organize open-air markets. Not that Bulgaria has ever lacked this type of event... For decades, Bulgarians have had traditions of holding fairs and street markets, where local traders and producers offer their goods. Moreover, in combination with the markets, around Christmas and New Year's holidays, Bulgarians follow their typical holiday traditions. But the globalization processes brought the trend to mark this time of the year also with a visit to one of these Christmas markets while enjoying sausages or indulging in Bulgarian barbecue – an integral part of every festive day, as well as a normal day!

Here are some ideas for places with small Christmas towns in Bulgaria that you can visit in the winter of 2023 and check on Christmas decorations, treats, handmade gifts, and most importantly - enjoy delicious freshly prepared local and other food!

Of course, we start with the German Christmas market in Sofia, which is held in the City Garden and is one of the first to have ever been organized here. The wooden houses offer delicious and appetizing food, and handmade items suitable for gifts. There is also a stage where local musicians regularly play and sing festive music. Nice place to go and dance with your fellows from your mobility, by the way.

In the center of the capital, in front of the National Palace of Culture, there is another Christmas market where you can go and feel the true atmosphere of Christmas in Bulgaria and... enjoy roasted sausages and meatballs. From a distance, you can notice the thick smoke from the grills, where something for every taste is being cooked.

To the east of Sofia, just 70 km away, is the beautiful village of Chavdar, where from December 2 to December 31, a large Christmas market is held with many surprises, a music stage, a food area from local farmers and producers, Christmas sweets, creative and colorful handmade items.

In the city of Plovdiv, in front of the Central Post Office, from December 15 to December 26, the "Kapana" Christmas market is being held. Throughout the market, beautiful music plays, creating a good mood. The cozy and warm atmosphere is complemented by beautiful Christmas decorations, lights, and Christmas trees.

To the east, in the seaside capital Varna, a Christmas market is also organized at the city port. An amusement park, an ice rink, songs, dances, and a variety of delicious temptations are part of the entertainment you can enjoy. Local artists have also joined the market and offer their creations.

In other larger cities in the country, Christmas markets are also organized. Depending on where you are now, you can explore how things are and where you can enjoy Christmas treats outdoors, to the sounds of festive songs.

Guys, last week I visited the Christmas market in Sofia - just in front of the National Palace of Culture! I tried the German Bratwurst for the first time - I absolutely loved it! Then I spend like 25 minutes degustating some Bulgarian Type of Tahini - veery delicious! Is there somebody who already checked this Christmas market? What did you try?
