Do You Know What the Tradition “Koleduvane” Is?

I have the pleasure of introducing you to an exceptional custom that is traditional for Christmas celebrations in Bulgaria.
Among the Christmas decorations, the festive table, and the cozy atmosphere with loved ones, on December 24 (Christmas Eve) the so-called "Koledari" join the celebrations of the Bulgarian family.
Koledari are young men - guys ready to get married. They are led by an older married man who teaches them to sing special songs. With the arrival of December 25 at midnight, and until the morning, they go from house to house to sing songs of health and success.
Their leader is called the "Kum" (literally means "best man") and is the mediator between the old and the new year. He is the most representative figure and must be a good steward, the man in the prime of his powers, and have the gift of a good speaker.
The word "koledari" comes from the Roman word calendae - the first days of January. The tradition dates back a long time, and the main task of young men is to wish for health during the year.
The tradition itself is called "koleduvane".
The preparation for it begins on December 20th, when Bulgarians celebrate another holiday - Ignazhden.
The group is formed by 10-15 men from a particular locality. They gather, rehearse songs, prepare special clothes, and choose their leader. On the 25th the leader stands at the forefront and guides the others. From midnight until sunrise on Christmas, it is the time when the boys sing in front of people's homes.
The tradition is mainly observed in villages. In cities, groups are also formed to roam around nearby neighborhoods.
Koledari’s songs can be heard as part of festive programs. There are also children's koledari groups that sing in schools and institutions.
To give you a better idea of what koledari do, I'm sharing a video of professional koledari performing the tradition and a video of children who also keep the tradition alive.
The first song they sing is for the oldest person in the house, and then they sing for the other family members.
An interesting fact is that tradition dictates the tour start from the home of the mayor, the teacher, or another important person in the local community.
Usually, the hosts of the house give gifts to the koledari, like bread, honey, pastry, money, and other products. After the group sings the Christmas songs, the leader, holding the gifted bread, expresses koledari’s wishes.
It concludes with the wish: "As many stars in the sky, as much health in this house!"

Имам удоволствието да ви разкажа за един изключителен обичай, който е традиционен за коледните чествания в България.
Между коледната украса, празничната трапеза и уютната обстановка с любимите хора, на 24 декември (Бъдни вечер) в дома на българското семейство пристигнат и така наречените „коледари“.
Коледарите са млади мъже - момци, готови за женене. Водени са от по-възрастен женен мъж, който ги учи на специални песни. С настъпването на 25-ти декември в полунощ, та чак до утрото, те обикалят от къща на къща, за да пеят песни за здраве и успех.
Техният водач се нарича „кум“ и е посредник между старата и новата година. Той е най-представителната фигура и трябва да е добър стопанин, мъж в разцвета на силите си и да има дар слово.
Думата „коледари“ произлиза от римската дума calendae – първите дни на месец януари. Традицията датира отдавна, а основната задача на младите мъже е да пожелаят здраве през годината.
Обичаят се нарича „коледуване“.
Подготовката за него започва на 20-ти декември, когато българите отбелязват друг празник - Игнажден. Групата се сформира от 10-15 мъже от едно населено място. Те се събират, разучават песни, създават коледарски групи и избират техен водач. Водачът стои най-отпред и наставлява останалите. От полунощ до изгрев слънце на Коледа е времето, през което момците пеят пред домовете на хората.
Традицията се спазва предимно по селата. В градове също се сформират групи, които обикалят близките квартали. Песни на коледари може да се слушат и като празнична програма в ресторанти и заведения. Има много детски коледарски групи, които пеят в училища и институции.
За да си представите по-добре какво точно правят коледарите, споделям с Вас видео от деца, които изпълняват традицията.
Първата песен, която изпълняват коледарите е за най-възрастния човек от къщата, а след това пеят за останалите членове на семейството. Интересен факт е, че традицията повелява обиколката да започне от дома на чорбаджиите, кмета, учителя или попа.
Обикновено стопаните на къщата даряват коледарите с кравай, мед, питка, пари и други продукти. След като групата изпее коледните песни, водачът, който държи в ръце подарения кравай, изрича коледарски пожелания.
Завършва се с пожеланието: „Колкото звезди по небето, толкоз здраве в тази къща!“.
