Hi friends!

As 2024 begins to gain momentum, let’s take a moment to reflect on the little things that bring us joy.

One thing that brings me a lot of joy are some of my favorite words I’ve picked up along the way while studying French and German.

German

Bildungsroman - A coming of age story. A good example is, “Of Human Bondage’, a 1915 novel by William Somerset Maugham. It’s one of my favorite books. :)

French

Pamplemousse - is grapefruit. I adore this word because I find it so cute and fun to say!

What about you? Have you any favorite English words? Tell us!

Curiously yours,

Iya, OLS Community Manager- English

Hi everyone!

Wave! Wave is definitely my favorite English word!
We first met when I was eleven, learning an English lesson. My mind and heart were immediately caught by the sonority of the word. I could see the blue wave swell and grow in front of me, I could hear the rumbling of the wave coming to me with this beautiful white foam lace and, then, both the smashing of it against the rocks or the soft dying of it on the sand in the "ve" of the word... as the wave vanished into the air.
Even the writing of "wave" draws the shape of it. Yes, Wave is definitely my favorite English word!

Brigitte!!!!

Your description brought tears to my eyes!! You've birthed in me an appreciation for "Wave" like I've never known before.

In fact, I am speechless. And that's rare for me! Hahaha!!!

By the way, Brigitte, have you considered entering the OLS Video Contest? One of the topics is to share your favorite word. And since you have one, you can certainly be a contender for the 300 euro gift card! See the details here.

Aaaah... even for me it is a delightful word to say! :D

What makes it your favorite? Is it the pronunciation? Or the meaning of it?

By the way, it's very cool to see the translations in other languages. Thanks for that!

Hello everyone!
So i thought about it so much and I can surely say that my favorite english word is "mesmerizing". I find this word extremely charming to say, I don't know why, but i find it so elegant and deep as a word. I don't remeber when I met It for the first time, maybe in some story that I was reading on the internet, but I do remember that I felt this word. It was capable to make me feel exactly what the story was telling. Definetly my favorite english word<3
