Kuulsad Eesti kunstnikud, keda peaksid teadma

Ilon Wikland

Elvy Kalep

Näiteks üks šabloon on Sammalhabe (Eno Raua romaanist "Naksitrallid"), keda politseinik vahistab.

Famous Estonian Artists You Should Know

Ilon Wikland

If you grew up reading the books by Astrid Lindgren, you may have noticed the illustrator for many of her books was the same person - someone by the name of Ilon Wikland. Did you know that Ilon Wikland is an Estonian born Swedish artist? Her birth name is Maire-Ilon Pääbo and she was born in Haapsalu. Her work is beloved by many children in different countries. Thanks to her contribution to bringing so many stories to life, she has been called the “creator of childhoods”.

It seems that being an artist was in her blood as her mother Vida Pääbo-Juse.was also an artist who specialized in painting and textile arts. Pääbo-Juse was also a graduate of the esteemed Pallas Art School. If you want to learn more about Estonian art, you should check out the graduates of the Pallas Art School!

Ilon Wikland is held in very high regard in Estonia and especially in Haapsalu where she grew up before moving to Sweden. In 2009, a theme center called Ilon Wikland's Wonderland was opened at the Läänemaa Museum in Haapsalu and one year later she became an honorary citizen of Haapsalu. The reason behind the name Wonderland is a reference to her illustration style, which has the power to bring fairytales to life in the words of Astrid Lindgren.

Elvy Kalep

Elvy Kalep is first and foremost known as an aviator and the first Estonian female pilot. Her art career is also very closely tied to her passion for aviation and specifically her goal to encourage more women to become interested in the field and become pilots.

During her life she lived in Russia and China. She also studied oil painting in Paris. She eventually moved to the United States, where she published and illustrated a children’s book called Air Babies. The foreword of the book was written by famous pilot Amelia Earheart.

Her art and design career took off in the United States in the 1940s when she started to focus on toy design and production. Her greatest successes are a parachuting doll called Patsie Parachute and dolls with blank faces that children can draw on themselves called Scribbles Dolls. In her later years, she created artworks out of leather and traveled across the country promoting and selling her art.

Even though she settled in the US and stayed there for the rest of her life, she was a trailblazer, and her accomplishments were praised and acknowledged in Estonian publications when she passed away.

Edward von Lõngus

Maybe you have already spotted the art of Estonian Banksy, also known as Edward von Lõngus. Lõngus is actually a bit of a teasing way to refer to someone with long hair. His work heavily features social commentary and references to Estonian cultural touchstones.

For example, one stencil is of Sammalhabe ("Mossbeard", from Eno Raud's novel "Naksitrallid") who is being arrested by a police officer. Mossbeard is a character that is very close to nature and is the wise and calm type, which is why him being detained seems unjust.

His art has co-existed in the city space of Tartu and he won the Tartu City Culture Award in 2014. We highly encourage discovering the city through street art walking tours that will let you discover the works of Edward von Lõngus and other street artists who have brought art from the museums to the streets so anyone can enjoy it.

Let us know if you knew any of these artists before and which style is your favorite! You can leave your thoughts and share your favorite artist (Estonian or other) in the thread here
